AI Pins & Companion Devices — Reviews & 2026 Guide
AI pins and pocket companions had a rough launch in 2024 (Rabbit R1) and a disaster in 2025 (Humane Ai Pin was discontinued), but the category has matured in 2026. The Rabbit R1 is now genuinely useful after software updates, and Plaud's recorders have become the must-have AI accessory for knowledge workers. Here's what to buy — and what to avoid.

Frequently Asked Questions
For most people, no — but for specific use cases, yes. The Rabbit R1 has become a genuinely capable voice assistant with unlimited AI calls, translation, and a built-in camera that can identify objects. The Plaud Note family is genuinely excellent for anyone who attends meetings, conducts interviews, or takes a lot of verbal notes. But if you're looking for a Humane Ai Pin-style 'replace your phone' device, that vision is dead — don't buy into it.
Humane was acquired by HP in February 2025 and the Ai Pin was discontinued. The device stopped receiving updates and the cloud service was shut down. We keep the Humane Ai Pin listed in our catalog for historical reference only — do not buy one, even used. HP reportedly acquired Humane for its AI software platform, not the hardware.
Most don't, which is part of the appeal. The Rabbit R1 includes unlimited AI conversations and translation with the purchase price (no monthly fee). Plaud Note includes 200 transcription minutes per month free; the Pro plan ($8/month) unlocks unlimited transcription and AI summaries. The discontinued Humane Ai Pin required a $24/month subscription that no longer exists.
AI pins are designed for hands-free, ambient AI interaction — primarily voice. They don't have rich displays (or, in the case of Plaud Note, any display at all). Smartwatches are designed for glanceable information and notifications. The categories are complementary, not competitive — many users wear an Apple Watch for notifications and a Plaud NotePin for meeting recording.
